Books I’ve Written

My Amish Roots by Shawn Smucker

Framed around the passing of my Amish great-grandmother Katie Stoltzfus, My Amish Roots tells the story of my Stoltzfus family from 1624 – 2010: four generations in Germany, a trek across the Atlantic, and over 220 years of living and dying in Pennsylvania.

Chasing down these stories, I found myself constantly coming back to these two questions: Where do we come from? What do we leave behind?

And Then We Danced by Mike Lusby, Fi Lusby, and Shawn Smucker

The foundation of a marriage forms long before two people stand at the front of a church and say, “I do.”

The foundation of a marriage forms in a little boy’s heart, when his alcoholic father tells him, “You’ll never amount to anything.” The foundation of a marriage forms in the soul of a little girl, when three neighbor boys sexually abuse her in the dark corner of a barn.

And, so often, the foundations upon which marriages are built are not strong enough to weather the storms that come after “I do”: tragedies, depression, and infidelity send shivers through the already cracked foundation, and too often the structure collapses.

But it doesn’t have to.

This is the true story of a marriage, told in alternating perspectives from the man and woman who lived it, felt it, and fought to keep it together.

Think No Evil by Jonas Beiler and Shawn Smucker

A book I co-wrote with Jonas Beiler, Think No Evil tells the story of the Amish school shooting from the perspectives of  various first-responders and counselors on the scene. But it also follows the message of forgiveness as it radiates out from the Amish families, transforming a community and garnering world-wide attention.

83 Lost Sheep by Gerry Stoltzfoos and Shawn Smucker

A book I co-wrote with Gerry Stoltzfoos, 83 Lost Sheep tells the engaging story of the church Gerry started in Gettysburg, PA. Gerry explains why new churches are vital to the overall health of The Church and, providing Luke 10 as a backdrop, uses his own church planting experience to discuss how it can happen.

“Gerry breaks the mold of how to reach the 83% of American culture who do not got o church…Talk about a guy who is living what he’s preaching. Gerry Stoltzfoos is a planter of church planters…” Matt Keller, author of The Up the Middle Church
