“In Schwartz’s estimation, choice has made us not freer but more paralyzed, not happier but more dissatisfied.”
I agree with almost all of this – I have found that I prefer shopping at our small, local, mom and pop grocery store because less choices equals less stress. I like our neighborhood coffee shop and restaurants for the same reason. I feel better and less overwhelmed when I am not faced with TOO much.
Nobody likes to hear this, but some of the best advice I ever received was from my mother – after crying and fighting our way through the newborn/new marriage first year together I called my mom to complain and she said the only way for things to get better was for me to lower my expectations. It was up to me to decide where to draw the line and once I moved it back a little, we fought less. I KNOW people will think that is crazy, but it worked and we are both better for it.
Right onh-tis helped me sort things right out.
