Can You Solve Today’s Story Riddle?

She sat there, in bed, looking around at the others. She tried to act normal, tried to disguise the panic slowly rising. Nothing out of the ordinary had happened to them that morning – they went about their routines. They stretched and eventually stood up, grabbed a bite to eat, took their time getting a drink, then finally walked outside.

Yet she still sat there, completely still. Scared to move because of what had happened earlier that morning.

It had been a swelling, a strange sort of massive movement that took place under her. She could still feel it. She raised her head and glanced over to where the others had slept, checking to see if they had left anything behind. There was nothing – except the small hollows left on their beds from where their warm bodies had passed the night.

She took a deep breath and stood up. At first she ignored her sleeping spot.

Nothing happened, she told herself. Nothing’s there.

She ate a little. She drank some water. But then she couldn’t resist any longer – she had to find out what had happened to her in the night, what had come out of her.

She turned her eyes toward her bed.

Dear God, what is that? Where did it come from?

She scrambled out the door, hoping that the others would forget who had been sleeping in that spot. She didn’t want to be identified with it.

Yet she felt an odd connection.

So, what’s this story about? (I’ll confirm the correct answer tomorrow).

  1. I have a guess. I think the narrator is a cow or a horse who’s just given birth for the first time in a barn. Reading the story again, everything seems to fit but I could be way off! Can’t wait to hear the answer!

  2. So this is not another 20 questions deal like we played with David the other night? We just give a guess and hope we’re right?

Okay, I’m gonna’ say some animal had babies in the night.

      1. Not better, just clarifying the rules! ;-D

That said, with my husband out of town until NEXT FRIDAY, someone is going to have to do that again soon to help keep my evenings occupied.

  3. I think the farm animal idea holds water, but since the animal is talking to herself, this is clearly one of those bizarre Janette Oke children’s stories. Is the answer a talking cow who just gave birth?

  4. Animal Rapture.

As a latchkey kid growing up during the Hal Lindsey “Late, Great Planet Earth” hysteria of the late 1970s my mind always runs to the Rapture. Because on more than a handful of occasions, I would come home to an empty house after playing at the nearby ball field after school. Without explanation, my entire family of seven would routinely would go grocery shopping or pick up a pizza to bring back home for dinner without me.

I wasn’t scarred just scared – wishing that we’d all been ready (sniff)…..
