Tuesday’s Top Ten – Ice Cream Flavors

Last week’s Top Ten Candies brought about some strong emotions.  Pretty much every candy I listed got trashed: Kit Palmer created his own top 10 completely ignoring all of my choices (diss!), and Bryan Allain not only trashed Sweet Tarts but went so far as to try to introduce candy cigarettes into the top ten.

This is a family blog folks.

So in the interest of providing a chance for unity and reconciliation, I present to you the Top Ten Ice Cream Flavors of all-time.  Surely there will be no disagreement when it comes to ice cream:

10) Turkey Hill Tin Roof Sunday – chocolate-covered peanuts in a fudge-swirled Vanilla ice cream.  And this one’s just a warm-up.

9) Haagen-Dasz Cookies and Creme – ice cream with anything resembling Oreo cookies has got to be a good thing

8) Rainbow Sherbet – is this really ice cream?  I don’t know, but it’s in the ice cream section, it’s cold, and I love it

7) Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby – seeing as how pretzels are my favorite snack food, how about a little Fudge Covered Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels in Vanilla Malt Ice Cream Rippled with Fudge & Peanut Butter . . .

6) Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough – many a time I’ve eaten an entire pint of this, garnering 1080 calories, 56 grams of fat, 176% of my daily allowance for saturated fat, and 60% of my daily calcium.  That last one keeps me coming back for more.

5) Ben and Jerry’s Fish Food – nutritional information about the same as the cookie dough variety, but in this one you get ripples of marshmallow . . . and little chocolate fish.

4) Turkey Hill Chocolate – the classic chocolate can’t be beat.  Wait, it’s number four.  It can only be beat by . . .

3) Baskin Robbins Rocky Road – almonds and marshmallows perfectly combined in a vat of chocolate.  Can someone clone this flavor and put it in brussel sprouts?  Or broccoli?  Or anything that’s good for me?

2) Cold Stone Creamery Mud Pie Mojo – a lot of Coldstone Creameries in the northeast are going out of business, so I support the one remaining store in our area with zeal.  You have to be careful though – sometimes I wonder if their cost cutting measures involve less mix-ins.  But a Mud Pie Mojo (coffee ice cream with Oreos, almonds, peanut butter, fudge sauce and marshmallow cream) properly made is chunky and delicious and nearly unbeatable, except by . . .

1) Turkey Hill Vanilla – that’s right, folks, Vanilla.  Not just for what it is, but for the opportunities it presents.  I tend to eat it with Cheerios loaded on top.  Or use it to dip pretzels or potato chips in.  Or sometimes, in the summer, I’ll douse it in grape Kool-Aid.  Nothing beats Vanilla.

Anyone who shares any of this week’s posts on Facebook, or Twitter, or starts following me on Twitter (@shawnsmucker) this week, or shares a link to this post pretty much anywhere except in the men’s bathroom stall at the Lancaster Border’s, will gain entrance to win a free copy of Matt Mikalatos’s book Imaginary Jesus (no, not the copy he gave me; I’m keeping that one thank you very much).  Each time you share a post you get an additional entry to win the book, so go wild (and comment somewhere on what you’ve done so that I can keep track).

  1. I am not surprised to see that your ice cream reveals your Anabaptist bias. Really, while it’s good, only the Mennonites would think to put pretzels in ice cream.

  2. hahahahaha you had me laughing out loud at that one. Anabaptist, yes, but my parents were born into Amish families, and the Amish / Mennonite split happened hundreds of years ago . . . probably irrelevant, as all Anabaptists love pretzels

  3. Well Shawn, last week wasn’t a complete diss…we’ll always have blow pops as common ground!

Now onto this week’s Top 10:

    10) Turkey Hill Tin Roof Sunday Never cared for schizophrenic ice cream…am I vanilla or not? (Don’t get me started on Neapolitan ice cream!)

    9) Haagen-Dasz Cookies and Creme – Every brand makes a Cookies & Creme, none stand up to a DQ Oreo Blizzard.

    8) Rainbow Sherbet – This is like putting a Vespa in your Top 10 motorcycle list!

    7) Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby – Now we’re getting somewhere. Definitely in my Top 10 (maybe Top 5).

    6) Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough – My wife’s favorite (her second favorite is cake batter). I don’t get it. I’d rather eat tollhouse cookie dough (or Duncan Hines cake batter).

    5) Ben and Jerry’s Fish Food – Absolutely Top 5!

    4) Turkey Hill Chocolate – What’s the deal with Turkey Hill? Love me some chocolate, but Edy’s Grand is my “go to” brand.

    3) Baskin Robbins Rocky Road – It’s okay, but somewhat redundant with your #5 (and not as good).

    2) Cold Stone Creamery Mud Pie Mojo – This is where you and I become brothers again! Absolutely my choice for #1! Sheer decadent goodness.

    1) Turkey Hill Vanilla – Again with the Turkey Hill! Maybe there’s something special about their vanilla (I’ve never even heard of Turkey Hill Ice Cream), but to me this is like saying your favorite color is “clear” or your favorite song is a “G Chord”. Unless you’re mixing in some serious toppings…no thanks!

    Notable omissions:
Baskin Robbins Peanut Butter ‘n Chocolate
Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey (was #1 until Cold Stone changed my life)
    Baskin Robbins Jamoca Almond Fudge
(Please note: I am fully aware that I contradict my comment about your #10 with this one)
Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie
Strawberry (any brand that used real strawberries will do)

Sorry to “diss” your list again, but hey we agreed on 30% this time!

    1. holy ice cream, batman! vanilla is to ice cream as clear is to color = fallacy!!! ultraviolet maybe, but definitely not clear.

at least we’re finding some common ground, kit. 30% is better than nothing . . . i guess.

      1. Obviously, I have a bias against vanilla. I’ve never really cared for it as a stand-alone flavor in anything (except maybe Vanilla Coke). Given the choice of chocolate or vanilla, I’ll choose chocolate 100% of the time (unless you are talking about flavoring added to Coke again).

  4. Gotta agree on TH’s Vanilla – the Vanilla Bean, that is. Right? That IS what you meant?! And I’m right there with you on dipping pretzels in it – the perfect mixture of salty and sweet.

  5. I did wonder where in the World strawberry was… Where was it Shawn???
An Vanilla Bean is right on – put some Kaluah on it (homemade of course!) and you’re A-OK for some ice cream..
Above all though, Sorbet – Raspberry Hagaan Daas is my most fav of all time. Then sherbet – any flavor really.

  6. I think this list needs to be a “Top 11 list” as I do agree with most of the flavors. That being said this list cannot be complete without the introduction of Mint Chocolate Chip, the WHITE, NOT the green. (btw, Turkey Hill all natural recipe)
